Located on the church grounds, the Justice Garden was founded in 2014 for the purpose of addressing the hunger of our neighbors near and far, while also showing ways to care for the environment.
Over the years, hundreds of volunteers from the congregation and community have come together to help us grow, sell and donate fresh, organic produce, including multiple varieties of heirloom tomatoes. From planting the seeds and growing saplings at home, to transplanting mature plants into our garden beds, to weekly harvests and Farm Stand sales - we are 100% reliant on volunteers to help us address food insecurity in our world.
And with the rainwater catchment tank for irrigation and the solar panels on our roof for energy, we have been able to demonstrate to the community methods of environmental stewardship.
In 2026, the Garden received a FARE Grant from Marin County Parks and Open Space Commission. These funds allowed us to refurbish the garden beds and to replenish the soil.
Since 2014, proceeds from the Plant Sale and Farm Stand have allowed us to donate close to $8000/year. Donations of fresh produce and our financial contributions have gone to the following ministries and services:

In January 2026, we were awarded a FARE (Food, Agriculture, and Resilient Ecosystems) grant for $11,261 from the Marin County Parks and Open Space Commission!
In the award letter, was this comment:
"Sleepy Hollow Presbyterian Church is to be commended for its strong leadership in the community, helping those in need through the Justice Garden Program."
In time for the 2026 growing season, the grant was used to refurbish the Justice Garden - adding new soil, raising and repairing the 12 year old beds, installing gopher wiring and continuing the important work of addressing food insecurity in Marin County.
Thank you to Patti Vance and Michael Durphy for their work to prepare the proposal for this grant. We are deeply grateful for their passion and dedication towards the Justice Garden.

Sleepy Hollow's commitment to the community extends to two local elementary schools in San Rafael.
LAUREL DELL - In addition to helping to create and support the outdoor gardens at Laurel Dell Elementary, we provide over 30 dinners to families at Thanksgiving.
SAN PEDRO - In partnership with First Presbyterian of San Rafael, several of our members provide afterschool programming on Wednesdays throughout the school year.

Youth and adults from SHPC love to prepare, serve and enjoy dinners several times throughout the year with community guests at the Street Chaplaincy dinners at First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo.
From donating fresh produce to stirring large pots of chile, setting tables and serving over 75 dinner guests, our members enjoy serving the community through this ministry.
